Matt's Graduation

My oldest nephew graduated.

We couldn't find him after the ceremony so Breezy took one for the team and climbed on a trash can. In her wedges.

Mike made sure she was safe.

Matt and his Mom, my sister Kristi.

His Mom and Dad.

My Mom and Dad, or Grandma and Papa.

We got in on the celebration too.

His graduation party was pretty cool. It was at a "barn" that had old antique vehicles, a couple waterslides, and all sorts of weird stuff in the barn.

J, of course, was interested in the garden in the back of a truck.

Water Projects

I have a rule. It is a rule that was born from a sweaty, miserable, temperamental day.

I don't help with outside projects when it gets really hot.

J has been talking about putting in sprinklers for years.

We've lived in this house seven years now.

This year was the year. And he's cutting it close with the late season.

It was not an easy project. His brother Michael lives in Idaho now and told him flex pipe is better. And it probably is, but for some reason everyone and their brother in Phoenix use PVC, so the flex pipe pieces are difficult to find.

But we dug the trenches and the sprinkler project is limping along.

I dug the majority of that trench one weekend when J had to work all day Saturday and Sunday. That was not a good weekend.

This little girl does not see a lap she cannot sit in. Even if you are bent over trying to do sprinkler work. And then she wants to take her tiny little tongue and clean your nose for you.

The sprinklers are somewhat done....ish. J installed the sprinkler heads for the half of the lawn that isn't dead and he can manually turn them on. He still needs to connect the electrical and fix some leaks. Then his plan is to do the other half of the system once he re-seeds the lawn in fall.

Also, he accidentally cut the internet line. He thought it was the old sprinkler system, which we have been pulling up piece by broken PVC piece. It was not. He was able to fix it but a technician is coming out tomorrow for a permanent fix. We'll see how much that's going to cost me since I am always finding little surprise charges on my Cox bill that J gets to call about. And they tell him they'll remove it. Just to find it on next month's bill. It's a fun little game. They think we're just going to give up or not notice. They underestimate how cheap I am and how anal I am about checking my bank statement.

But I digress.

We replaced the tub diverted in our guest bath (here) a few years ago. It was time to replace it in the master. Luckily it just twists off and then the new one twists on, easy.

Except now it doesn't match. J needs to take some showers and get it all hard-water stained. (For the record, I scrub my tub, but I scrub the part my naked body sits in. The hard water doesn't bug me. At least, not enough to do anything about it.)

We also replaced the guest bath shower head. This is where I give the dogs baths and I wanted one with a hose that I could take down and maneuver the spray. I bought one for $10 at TJ Maxx. I'm interested to see how it holds up. It's plastic instead of metal.

Over the weekend, J told me the City of Phoenix was giving away free compost. You just had to show up. Also, the first 15 people got a free rain barrel.

So we got up at 7:00 on a Saturday morning and waited in line for an hour (we were not one of the first 15), then shoveled a truckload of compost into my truck and then shoveled it out. It was 9 and a half wheelbarrows. About the same as when we go to Singh Farms, except Singh dumps it in with a tractor. J said it was the good compost, would have cost $50 (we get the cheaper $30 stuff).

Here is a little 30 pound dog for reference. Also, some dog poo in the photo. That's pleasant.

I am so proud of these two little dogs. I told them to stay and left the gate open and they stayed. They know there are treats in it for them. I think Osa, my chow, has been good for Tiny, the little Chihuahua. She has taught her how to behave. She's a good big sister. Tiny isn't as annoying as I thought she was going to be.

Birthday Weekend

Last weekend was J's birthday weekend. I took Thursday and Friday off to have a nice four day weekend with him.

It was glorious.

On Thursday he wanted to do brunch at Snooze, so after a nice sleep in we headed over.

We figured it wouldn't be too busy on a Thursday at 10:00, but we underestimated the popularity of the place. We had to wait half an hour before we were seated. Then we had to wait another forty minutes for our food. People who had been seated after us got their food before we did. I was getting a little nervous, because I had scheduled us massages and the appointment time was approaching. So as soon as our food was put down I asked for the check. I didn't complain about the wait, but the waitress advised that the food was on the house and it's shouldn't have taken that long.

Then we got our massages.

When we got home, the front yard was flooded. I followed the source to our backyard. We are in the process of installing a sprinkler system ourselves. The connection to the house had been leaking, so J loosened the clamp to tighten it but forgot to tighten the clamp. So it popped off and our backyard and front yard was flooded. So that wasn't great.

We hung out for a bit (I took a nap) and then went out to dinner. Pork on a Fork has delicious brisket.

When we got home I lit him a candle and we had cake.

Friday was a good day. J had to work a partial day, so I took time to do random things that I had been meaning to do, like sew a hole in a sweater, donate some clothes, and clean off the bookshelf. It was hard letting go of some of my college textbooks (I worked so hard in those math classes!) but I hadn't touched them in ten years so it was time. Plus I got J some new books for his birthday, and we really needed the room.

My Dad's birthday is a day after J's, and then my Mom's birthday is a week after, so we went out to a family dinner. I forgot to take photos, but it was a lot of fun.

Saturday was the Alt AZ 93.3 concert J had been looking forward to. My friend Rich just changed jobs but used to work at a radio station, so he got us free tickets. Saved us about $90, which was awesome.

The concert was a lot of fun. We brought a chair, but would go up to the stage when the bands were performing. We saw Jr Jr, Born, The Congos, and Nate Ruiz.

After one of the performances was done, we went back to the chair and a (very drunk) girl was sitting there.
Me: Um, I think you are in my chair.
Drunk girl: Oh yes! I'm sorry! I just needed some place to sit. I was keeping it warm for you. I didn't touch any of your stuff, I promise! (Hands me my sweater that had been sitting on the chair. Pauses.) Oh, did you want it back?
Me: ......Yeah.

There was also a point where J and I had ice cream and a guy walked up to us and said, "I'll give you $20 if I can lick your ice cream." Considering the ice cream cost nowhere near that amount, I told him sure. He grinned and started to bend down and stuck out his tongue. I told him I needed to see the money first. He started laughing and told us he's Canadian and just likes to mess with Americans and thanks for teasing him back.

So no $20 but overall it was a great concert.
